What is P2P?

Peer to Peer lending connects people who want to invest money (Lenders) directly with people who want a loan (Borrowers). By using technology to reduce costs, we are able to pass on the savings to give better returns for Lenders and better rates for Borrowers.

Carilend’s role is to act as the platform to bring the parties together. We apply a very stringent level of screening on all prospective Borrowers to ensure only those who pass our strict criteria, are good with their money and can afford it are approved for loans.

Our platform then matches those approved Borrowers with Lenders who have selected how long they want to lend for and at what interest rates. Lenders’ money is split into small slices and spread over many Borrowers and many loans, which diversifies the risk for Lenders. Each small slice is paired with other small slices in order to fully fund each individual loan.

After that, our platform takes care of collecting every loan repayment and splitting it up between all the Lenders who have contributed funds to each loan. The platform also provides a full statement of what’s going on to every Lender and Borrower.

Bitt

Bitt is a Financial Technology company that utilises distributed ledger technology to improve speed, efficiency and significantly reduce the costs of the payment system. The Bitt Wallet is the sole consumer access point to the entire Bitt ecosystem. It allows users to send and receive money globally, and process transactions from the convenience of their mobile device or computer. Users can simply enter the receiving party’s Bitt address (or have them scan a randomly generated QR code in person) to send money. This peer-to-peer money transfer system doesn’t rely on complicated correspondence communication chains or any centralized authority figure. All of the transactions are approved and held accountable by the Blockchain.

The Bitt mandate for Caribbean-wide financial inclusion extends to those who are not smartphone primed. The Bitt Teller is a physical kiosk that can be a cash-in and cash-out point for those within the ecosystem, while also being a transfer facilitator for those without mobile devices.

Bitt’s Merchant Solution is a Payment Processing software that allows merchants to accept Bitcoin and digital currency for their goods and services in-store or online. Any merchant, of any size, is able to create a free merchant account with Bitt and gain the ability to instantly and digitally receive local and foreign payments. Bitt allows merchants to create specific brand-tokens which populate a user’s Bitt wallet. A merchant can then offer these brand-tokens through tailored promotions and allow them to be redeemed for in-store or online benefits – it’s an entirely new kind of marketing tool.

Barbados Stock Exchange Inc.

Barbados Stock Exchange Inc. (BSE), formerly the Securities Exchange of Barbados, was re-incorporated on August 2, 2001 in accordance with the Securities Act 2001-13, which also enabled the establishment of the Barbados Securities Commission which on April 1st, 2011 was subsumed by the Financial Services Commission (FSC). The FSC is responsible for regulation of the Insurance sub-sector, Co-operative and Non-Banking Financial sectors and the entire Barbados Capital Market, including Self-Regulatory Organization and public companies whether listed or not.

The original trading facility, the Securities Exchange of Barbados, was established in 1987 under the Securities Exchange Act, Cap 318A, of 1982. The Securities Act 2001-13 repealed and replaced the original Act of 1982. However, the BSE remained a privately owned (by its Members), non-profit organization until December 22, 2015 when it became a shareholder-owned, for-profit organization after receiving the requisite approvals from its then Members, now new Shareholders, and by Order of the Supreme Court of Barbados approving the Scheme of Arrangement in accordance with section 224 (4) of the Companies Act thereby facilitating the demutualization of the BSE.

The strategic direction of the BSE is coordinated by a Board of Directors, through the Managing Director, which establishes By-Laws and Rules to regulate the role of the Exchange, licensed under the Securities Act, CAP 318A.

The Barbados Stock Exchange and its wholly owned subsidiary, the Barbados Central Securities Depository (BCSDI) are designated as Self-Regulatory Organizations (SROs) under the Securities Act and are regulated by the Financial Services Commission.

The Barbados Stock Exchange Inc. is a member of the World Federation of Exchanges with Correspondent Status.

Barbados Central Securities Depository Inc

The Barbados Central Securities Depository Inc. (BCSDI) is a limited liability company incorporated on October 20th, 1998. It is a facility for holding securities and enables share transactions to be processed by book entry. A Book Entry System facilitates the change of ownership of Securities electronically, without the need for the movement of physical documents, i.e. the BCSDI is an electronic means of recording the ownership of shares.

The BCSDI facilitates the immobilization of securities, the clearance of trades and settlement of funds through the Central Bank of Barbados and also offers services as Registrar of public and listed companies and mutual funds.

The BCSDI registers the stock in the name of the beneficial owner. The certificates are physically held in our vault. The BCSDI also records the securities movements in the name of the beneficial owner using the National Identification Number. The BCSDI’s book entry system has shortened the settlement cycle, and ensures that investors receive payment for shares sold and ownership of shares purchased within a shorter time.

The BCSDI is a partner of the Association of National Numbering Agencies and is responsible for assigning all International Securities Identification Numbers or ISINs to all locally registered securities.
